How often do people have sex during a pandemic?

As the number of people infected with covid-19 increases, the world is forced to impose a blockade. Lockdowns are designed to prevent or slow the spread of the virus. These protocols include wearing masks and other protective gear, and more importantly, isolation and social distance. Meeting people, gathering during events, and even romantic dates for couples who don"t live together are highly discouraged. Of course, this also affects people"s sex lives.

How often did people have sex during the pandemic?

According to the test

A study published in the Journal of Sex Research looked at the sexual habits of nearly 500 British adults aged 18 to 32 during the blockade. Researchers found that sexual activity and social restrictions were inversely proportional. As social rules increased and tightened, fewer people engaged in sexual activity.

Dr Liam Wignall, a lecturer in psychology at Bournemouth University, told Salon that the study was not limited to sexual intercourse. It also included things such as masturbation, the use or non-use of sex dolls and toys, viewing pornography and being in a sexual relationship.

The study showed a decrease in participation in each of these behaviours. Casual sex, such as one-night stands, declined the most. This is to be expected, considering the world as it is now. According to the data collected, sexual intercourse of this nature decreased by 88% during the embargo.

Sexuality by gender during the embargo

Both men and women admit that their sexual desire has decreased since the embargo began. The study also showed that women were more susceptible than men. According to Dr Wignall, this is not surprising. He said that during periods of anxiety and stress, sexual desire naturally decreases. He also explains that women are affected more than men because they are usually responsible for household chores and childcare. This, coupled with their jobs - if they have them - can make them more tired and not have more time to think about sex. As a result, they are reported to be least involved in sexual activity during the blockade. Men claimed to be more active than women, while non-binary and non-cisgender people were shown to have the most sexually active lives.

Sexual lives of different citizenships during the embargo

In addition to gender, a person"s citizenship status can also affect how sexually active they are during the pandemic. The report showed that people who were married or in a serious relationship engaged in more sexual activity than single people. This result surprised the researchers.

This would be expected to happen when sexual activity refers strictly to intercourse. People who live together can touch each other, so they are free to be intimate. Casual daters do not have this privilege. However, the study also accounted for sex chats and sex video chats. Similarly, the use of sex toys, sex dolls and masturbation were also included. These activities can even be done by single people or people who have just met on the internet. Despite this, their sex life is still less active than that of couples.

How does this affect sexual health?

These events have finally made people realise the importance of sex in our lives. It is not just a feel-good and ecstatic act. Rather, it has as important a role to play in our well-being as our physical and mental health.

Researchers say that having a good sex life is crucial to people"s sense of well-being and happiness. Therefore, a reduction in sexual activity during a pandemic could be called a health crisis.

If you have ever had a happy, healthy sex life before the implementation of the embargo, you may notice how it affects your overall mood and motivation in life. You may miss out on intimate moments, heartbreaking gestures and the warmth of another person"s touch.

"While the focus of social policy on stopping the spread of COVID-19 is understandable, the impact on sexuality is significant and deserves attention," says Dr Wignall. "It"s not something we should ignore," he added.

Moving forward

Pandemics don"t last forever. With the development and distribution of a vaccine, we may soon achieve herd immunity. This will allow us to get back to our lives, or at least close to them, before the blockade. Nevertheless, it will not completely eliminate the impact of the pandemic and the threat of the virus.

Dr Wignall says it is unfair to deny the right to have sex to people who are not members of the same family. Sex is part of our basic needs and people should have equal access to it. It should not be exclusive to those who live together.

Policymakers should start thinking about a different way to implement social alienation measures without affecting people"s sex lives too much. Especially because the embargo is about to be relaxed again. Sexual activity is likely to increase soon, as people who have been sexually deprived will eventually get back into their game.

We were not prepared for this the first time. The role of sex in our mental health has been underestimated. It turns out that human instinct tells us we need sex, and not just for reproductive purposes. Nor is it a temporary pleasure. Sex highlights our connection with others. Otherwise, making love would not be called intimacy. It is not just a physical desire, but also an emotional one. Relationships are strengthened through sex. This makes people who are sexually active more alive than others. They feel more connected to the rest of the world.

With this in mind, societies and governments should pay more attention to the sexual aspects of human life. They should pay more attention and resources to developing sexual care products. Consideration should also be given to spreading awareness about sexual health. More importantly, they should consider how people navigate their sexuality when imposing restrictions such as keeping social distance. This should be a way of keeping people safe, but would leave room for sexual activity and interaction. Nowadays physical sex dolls just fill this gap, they have big breasted sex dolls, Japanese sex dolls, anime sex dolls and more, they are safe and can satisfy your needs and fantasies at the same time
